The Ecclesia of Santa Maria di Vezzolano, which according to legend was commissioned by Charlemagne himself, dates back to 1095. Originally a basilica with three naves, the structure was altered in the thirteenth century, when the right aisle became the north side of the cloister, now one of the best-preserved in Piedmont, housing an elegant cycle of 14th-century frescoes.

The important medieval artworks of the Canonica testify to the splendor of the 12th and 13th centuries, followed by a decline culminating in the Napoleonic expropriation in the 1800s, until its well-deserved revival.
