The beginning of May, has always been a time for arboreal rites in the Roero.
From the pre-Christian period to the present day, the archaic custom of “piantè magg” has been maintained in San Rocco di Montaldo Roero and San Giuseppe di Sommariva Perno: here the pine tree becomes the protagonist of a great collective feast.
The May tree prepared, decorated and raised to the sky becomes an auspicious “arboreal medium” for the agricultural year, to promote the fertility of nature and life.
An archaic gesture of supernatural superstition, but also of hope and trust in nature, which knows how to guide us and behave.
New in 2025 for San Rocco di Montaldo Roero will be the raising of the tree performed by hand as it was a hundred years ago, with the help of ropes, poles and ladders, in a game of physical strength and cunning that will be rhythmically set to the music of the Fòra 'd Tùva, and the revival of the itinerant questua del cantè magg.
In San Giuseppe di Sommariva Perno, the large bonfire in the square, combined with the concert of the Musicant d'Alba, will create the right atmosphere of magic and suggestion around the food and wine banquets, to raise the tree at night. The evening will end with fireworks.
