Castiglione Tinella, Vineyards in Verse

There is ample parking available in Piazza XX Settembre, next to the impressive parish church, where you will also find signage for the various itineraries. From the church, head towards the nearby Town Hall (Palazzo Comunale) where there is the first of the red arrows indicated the Sandro Bobbio itinerary, with currently coincides with the yellow itinerary. Follow the arrow to the left along a paved, downhill road to the village’s beltway. At the intersection, follow along a brief section of the highway, then turn almost immediately to the right near a number of large silos. The street descends rapidly and turns into a dirt road. When you find a large walnut tree, turn sharply to the right and into the vineyards.

  • for who: all ages. non suited to strollers (small children should be in backpack carriers)
  • when: spring, autumn, winter without much snow

From this point, pay close attention to the red arrows as you walk among the grapevines, because some of the arrows have faded, while others are a bit far from the intersections. When in doubt, continue straight along the widest row between the vines, since the itinerary tends to continue in the same direction. Pay attention to the opposite side of the valley, and you may see one of the “verses in the vineyard”, the brief works of poetry written in white among the grapevines that are a feature of Castiglione Tinella.

When you reach a wide dirt road that cuts across your path, ignore the yellow arrow pointing down and take the uphill road to the right. The dirt road rises steeply alongside a cluster of trees to a paved road. Cross this road and head down through the vineyard to the main highway. The official itinerary turns left along a brief section of highway, but you can avoid this by heading straight down into the vineyard. Otherwise, follow the paved road to the left until you reach a small house, where you can catch a glimpse of other verses, then take the dirt road to the right, which heads down and back through the vineyards and runs parallel to the highway. You will head up slightly towards a group of trees and reach a cemetery (restrooms). Continuing along the wall, head to the left, again among the vineyards, just below the highway, until you get back up on the paved road. Follow this road to the left briefly, until the curve, where you will turn onto a dirt road to the right.

From here, you will see another verse of poetry among the vineyards on the opposite side. The dirt road continues slightly uphill and, ahead of you, you will see the village of Castiglione Tinella, while to the left you will have a view of a craggy gorge. Little by little, you will reach the centre of village at the silos you encountered earlier. Continue on the paved road to the right and back into the centre of village.

Notes

Avoid when raining due to the mud that develops in the vineyards.
