The name of this wine, renowned among the connoisseurs of white wines, is linked to the legend of Princess Gavia, daughter of Clodomiro King of the Franks, who married in secret against the advice of the court and settled in Gavi to escape from the royal troops. Her beauty and kindness inspired the name of the grape used to produce this wine, made from Cortese grapes grown in 11 towns belonging to an enclosed region in the province of Alessandria. Mentioned for the first time in a letter to the Marquis Doria in 1659, Gavi Docg is produced in different varieties, including "Tranquillo" "Frizzante", "Spumante", "Riserva" and "Metodo classico Spumante Riserva". The use of geographical indications is allowed for the "Tranquillo," "Frizzante" and "Spumante" varieties, as well as toponomies that refer to the towns and villages where the grapes are grown.
