A Doc wine (as per Ministerial Decree of November 22, 1994) bringing together different wines produced in several towns around Asti and Alesssandria. When there are no further indications, it refers to Monferrato Rosso and Monferrato Bianco, produced with respectively red-berry and white-berry grapes (both non-aromatic and authorised). Besides these two varieties, there are several others, including Dolcetto, Freisa, Cortese and Chiaretto (ciaret), rosé wine made from different grapes (Barbera, Bonarda, Dolcetto, Freisa, etc.).
Monferrato rosso Doc
Grape variety: non-aromatic grapes grown in recommended or authorised vineyards.
Minimum alcohol content: 11% vol.
Monferrato Chiaretto or Ciaret Doc
Grape variety: Barbera and/or Bonarda Piemontese and/or Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Dolcetto and/or Freisa and/or Grignolino and/or Pinot nero and/or Nebbiolo from the 85% to 100%; while the remaining 15% is made from non-aromatic grapes grown in recommended or authorised vineyards.
Minimum alcohol content: 10,50% vol.
Monferrato Dolcetto Doc
Grape variety: Dolcetto from the 85% to 100%; while the remaining 15% is made from non-aromatic grapes grown in recommended or authorised vineyards.
Minimum alcohol content: 11% vol.
Monferrato Freisa Doc
Grape variety: Freisa from the 85% to 100%; while the remaining 15% is made from non-aromatic grapes grown in recommended or authorised vineyards.
Minimum alcohol content: 11% vol.
