Ring route in the northern lands surrounding Asti, a step back in time, admiring the architectural jewels of the Romanesque art.
Parish churches, small churches and low-traffic roads for a tour of history and culture.
Our itinerary starts from Cocconato d’Asti, a lovely village listed among the Borghi più Belli d’Italia (Most Beautiful Hamlets of Italy) also called “Monferrato’s Riviera”. The lower part of the village with its shops is worth a careful visit, as well as the upper old town with its unique atmosphere of the past and a breath-taking view.
After Montechiaro, keep riding in the direction of Cortazzone. Cross over the main road SS 458 and begin the uphill climb. After less than 2 kilometres, close to the castle of Casasco, turn right continuing along the ridge to Soglio. The path continues downhill to Cortazzone; after 1 kilometre, cross the intersection and keep straight on in the direction of Montafia; after less than 1 kilometre ride, turn right on Mongiglietto hill: a short, steep climb which leads to the magical Church of San Secondo, another “place of the heart” where you can stop to admire the beauty of the Romanesque style.
A long, panoramic ascent between the vineyards leads to Albugnano. Without entering the village descend to the left towards the Abbey of Vezzolano, a symbol of Piedmont and the most important highlight of our itinerary. Before reaching the abbey, you can stop at the edge of the village towards Vezzolano by the cemetery of Albugnano, and visit the Church of San Pietro.
